The antimicrobial use (AU) in the “Point prevalence survey of healthcare associated infections and antimicrobial use in European acute care hospitals” protocol is defined as following:

  • the surgical prophylaxis should be registered if given the day before the survey (i.e. in the 24 hours prior to 8 a.m. on the day of the survey);

for all other antimicrobial use (e.g. treatment, medical prophylaxis), any given or planned (including intermittent treatments, e.g. alternate day) administration of * antimicrobials should be registered at the time of the survey only. If the antimicrobial agent given for treatment or medical prophylaxis was changed on the day of the survey, only the last antimicrobial agent at the time of the survey must be recorded. _____
